As our society has become more and more dependent on media for information, the trend of helicopter parenting has become very common. Helicopter parents are called that because they hover around their children in case danger strikes. Parents who follow this claim that society is more dangerous than ever before and that by keeping constant tabs on their children, they are keeping them from harm and danger.
However, the first problem with this is that society is safer than it’s ever been! Crime, in particular crime committed against children and minors, is decreasing rather than increasing. It only seems to be more prevalent because of the media. Before, people had to read the newspaper to find out about crimes perpetuated in other cities. Even then, it was hard to find out much information about it. With television, it’s easy to find out about every horrific crime that happens across the world.
Helicoper parenting also has a tendency to backfire. Teenagers who have been monitored and coddled their whole lives are likely to act out and rebel as soon as they can. Since they haven’t had the chance to make their own mistakes or explore the world on their own terms,
