The Problem with Helicopter Parenting

As our society has become more and more dependent on media for information, the trend of helicopter parenting has become very common. Helicopter parents are called that because they hover around their children in case danger strikes. Parents who follow this claim that society is more dangerous than ever before and that by keeping constant tabs on their children, they are keeping them from harm and danger.

However, the first problem with this is that society is safer than it’s ever been! Crime, in particular crime committed against children and minors, is decreasing rather than increasing. It only seems to be more prevalent because of the media. Before, people had to read the newspaper to find out about crimes perpetuated in other cities. Even then, it was hard to find out much information about it. With television, it’s easy to find out about every horrific crime that happens across the world.

Helicoper parenting also has a tendency to backfire. Teenagers who have been monitored and coddled their whole lives are likely to act out and rebel as soon as they can. Since they haven’t had the chance to make their own mistakes or explore the world on their own terms,

Coping With Downsizing

Inflation is a constant force that affects everyone. And, because wages have not increased for many people over the past few years (on account of corporate belt tightening and a troubled economy) a lot of families have been forced to downsize their living arrangements. This is especially difficult for large families who still have to house the same amount of people in a significantly smaller space, or for those who were used to having ample space and their own living areas.

However, in a situation like this, there are constructive things that can be done in order to cope with the changes that take place when a family moves from a home to an apartment. And it is important to remember that being a little bit closer to your family is not the end of the world.

For one thing, going from a nice Cincinnati house to one of the Cincinnati apartments (which may be just as nice, but a good deal smaller) can be a real challenge. For instance, sharing a room with a sibling can lead to a lot of additional tensions between family members, with the increased likelihood of screaming arguments breaking out over seemingly random, small issues.

One obvious, simple way to remedy this problem is to get out of the apartment for awhile and do fun activities together. Activities that are as easy, such as flying kites, having a picnic outdoors, riding bikes, or even taking a walk or a hike together in a scenic area, can get you breathing the fresh air and make you feel like you have your own space again. Also, consider going to the movies or checking out a local library or museum. You could also plan a fun, outdoor scavenger hunt activity that gets the whole family involved and inspires creativity. No matter what you do, enjoy the time you have with your family and make the best of it!
